Acapulco - Who doesn’t love some leisure?

Acapulco Bay

Acapulco is located in the state of Guerrero, pacific coast of Mexico. It is formerly known as Acapulco de Juárez. It is famous for being one of the oldest and noted beach resorts of Mexico. It became known as the gateway for Hollywood stars and businessmen in the 50’s. The city is divided in two. The North side is the ‘traditional’ one, where people may enjoy the beauty of nature and peace, combined with the old hotels, owned by people like John Wayne and Johnny Weismuller and nightclubs. The South part, on the other side, is more modern and urbanized. The thing that really makes this side different, however, is the tall newly build hotels.

The city crest is with broken reeds or cane. The name of the city – Acapulco comes from the Nahuatl language and means either “place of broken reeds” or “place of big reeds”. The previous extension of the name “De Juárez” was there because of Benito De Juárez, who served a five-term as president of the country. The official currency is the Mexican Peso (as of the end of 2009 the exchange rate was 12.971 Mexican pesos for one U.S. dollar). It was the first to use the “$” sign, later adopted and made famous by the U.S. Dollar.

Acapulco has always been famous with its nightlife. The clubs may change owners and names, but the soul always is the same. They open after 11p.m. and the fun continues the entire night up till at least 5 in the morning. Although in the past the city was somewhat an expensive and quite unreachable destinations for others than the movie stars and other American millionaires, today (especially in the springs) it is filled with visiting students. The thousands of youngsters enjoy a life free of any stress and try to forget the midterm exams with the help of the locals.

These same locals are a treasure to be around. If you go to the city, you might never actually realize you are in a city with a population of nearly a million people. They are well-behaved, educated, nice and very welcoming. Even though the official language of the town is Spanish, English is widely spoken and the locals can help you with any questions you might have.

So, what should you see except the clubs and bars and what can you do?
The city can offer from rock climbing and bungee jumping to golfing and romantic weddings. This is an example of how the age of the vacation destination has proven to help out with experience and efforts.

Smoking and animals are most of the times allowed, but there are specified rooms and places for them. Have this in mind. If you have some special needs and disabilities, it is best if you contact the local medical centre for more information.

Thanks for this post, makes

Thanks for this post, makes me want to leave the cold! Do you suggest International Health Insurance for trips to Acapulco. Can you recommend some very affordable places to stay while there? How is the strength of the currency there now?
